… Honiton Golf Club (HGC) are supporting more women and girls in East Devon to do just that.

Female golfers make up less than 20% of memberships in most golf clubs. Honiton Golf Club are working hard to change that.  But how?

Working closely with England Golf, HGC has recently been awarded the Women in Golf Charter. This prestigious accreditation signals the on-going commitment to support, enable, and inspire more women and girls in East Devon to take up the sport. In a way that’s fun, accessible and inclusive.

To launch a programme of initiatives HGC held a “Women on Par” Gin & Swing evening on Wednesday 26th April, with 42 women in attendance the night proved to be a huge success giving everyone the opportunity to learn about the health and social benefits that the game brings as well as how golf is becoming a much more accessible sport for women, in addition HGC were able to showcase what they are able to offer not only as a course but as a club.  Many of those who were in attendance signed up to for the Clubs Open Day which was held on Saturday 29th April along with the Golf Access Programme (a 10 week introduction to golf) which commences on 10th May.

Jayne Jackson (Lady Captain) said ‘We are delighted with the turnout for our first Women on Par event, the feedback has been extremely positive, which highlights the need to promote golf as a viable sport for women, it has also given us an opportunity to reach out to the local community and let them know about our club and what it has to offer.  We are looking forward to more events throughout the year which will further enhance our commitment of getting women into golf.’

Paul Hill (Club President) said ‘I am extremely encouraged to see that there are so many women who want to find out more about golf, as a club we are committed to supporting these initiatives.  It has been a wonderful event’

In addition to Women on Par HGC have been successful in their application for Girls Golf Rocks, another England Golf initiative, which is aimed to introduce girls from the age of 5 to 18 to golf, this programme is due to commence on 30thMay.
