The local branch of Samaritans is encouraging people across Exeter and East Devon to reach out to someone they care about for a cuppa and a catch up for Brew Monday - that’s January 16, the third Monday of January.

Volunteers from the branch will be out in force, with tea bags and cups, at six stations in the area: Exeter St David’s, Exeter Central, Exmouth, Dawlish, Tiverton Parkway and Okehampton.

The third Monday in January is sometimes referred to as ‘the most difficult day of the year’ but the charity is highlighting that many people have year-round issues especially concerning mental health, loneliness or family problems.

“We’re here for people in emotional crisis, and for people who are just finding life really tough and need to talk to someone who can help them work through it. That can happen any day of the year but Brew Monday helps focus attention on how important it is to know someone will listen” explains Mel Whittock, director of the Exeter, Mid & east Devon Samaritans branch.

Mel and other volunteers from the branch will be joined by station staff at the stations from early in the morning, handing out teabags and talking to passengers about the importance of reaching out and providing listening tips.

And to ensure nobody struggles alone, on Brew Monday or any other day, Samaritans is reminding everyone to check in on friends, family or colleagues. It doesn’t need to be a Monday or a cup of tea, it’s about connecting and really listening to each other.

“We’re really looking forward to being at our local stations to talk to passengers and are so thankful to the rail industry for their support” explains Mel.
