A perfect union of education as original Lenkiewicz paintings are exhibited at Torbay Art Show

Visitors to the second Torbay Art Show over the weekend of 21st and 22ndMarch 2020, are in for a unique opportunity.  A large selection of original paintings, observations, drawings and limited edition prints from Robert Lenkiewicz’s “Observations on Local Education” will be on display for all to enjoy.

In the 1980’s, Robert Lenkiewicz spent five years building up over 500 paintings on the theme of education called the “Education Project”.   Alongside the paintings were two volumes of observations written by the teachers, pupils, headmasters, governors, sociologists and educationalists who sat for the project, including Countess Dora Russell, and the prolific writer, educationalist and general cultural commentator Colin Wilson.  The original exhibition of the complete works of the project took place at the Barbican Studio in 1988.  One of the main paintings to be exhibited at the Torbay Art Show will be a large major piece from the project, Colin Wilson and his family. 

Reuben Lenkiewicz, curator, musician and son of the late Robert Lenkiewicz said “I feel that exhibiting my father’s seventeenth Project “Observations on Local Education”, in the setting of Torquay Boys’ Grammar School, would please my father very much and fit with the intentions and ethos of the original project.” He continued, “The work and values that the Torbay Art Show promotes, including the importance of art and creativity, particularly in the school setting with young people, makes for a perfect union between the paintings, my father’s original project and the Event.”  Reuben will be attending the event and available for admirers or art collectors to ask any questions about his father and his paintings.

The Torbay Art Show has been organised by the Parents’ Association of Torquay Boys’ Grammar School, and all proceeds will go towards the refurbishment of the Sixth Form centre. The investment will see the Sixth Form take on a brighter, more spacious appearance with computer and study rooms for unsupervised learning and new café area for students to join together in an open and friendly environment.
