People from the south west are being asked to saddle up for a cycling challenge that will raise vital funds for Diabetes UK this spring.

The UK Wide Cycle Ride runs throughout the 30 days of April. It is a perfect opportunity to take your fitness up a gear, while raising money for Diabetes UK’s work in funding life-saving research and making sure everyone living with the condition gets the care and support they need.

There are four virtual coast-to-coast distances to pick from, or you can even pick your own target. The set distances range from 150 miles through to 950 miles for more experienced cyclists, and you have the entire month of April to reach your chosen target. The aim is to challenge yourself – at your own pace – and pedal towards a stronger, healthier you.

Phaedra Perry, Diabetes UK south west regional head, said:“Cycling is a brilliant way to help you get fit and healthy, have fun and set yourself a challenge. Spring is on the way and, with the lighter evenings and warmer weather arriving soon, this challenge comes at the perfect time for anyone looking to saddle up and give it a try.

“So, whether you’re a weekend warrior, like to take it a mile at a time, or prefer to feel the burn on the spin bike, choose a distance that suits you, then complete it however and wherever you want.Your support can change lives.”

You can cycle the miles by embracing the outdoors, or by staying home and using an exercise bike, or a mix of the two.
The “coast-to-coast” distances to choose from are:

  • 150 miles: Seascale to Whitby (five miles a day)
  • 220 miles: Margate to Weston-Super-Mare (about seven miles a day)
  • 500 miles: North Coast of Scotland route (about 17 miles a day)
  • 950 miles: Land's End to John O'Groats (about 32 miles a day)
  • Or you can select your own miles and distance to cycle

Those taking part will get their own fundraising profile page. From there, it will be possible to connect to our UK Wide Strava challenge, or you can track your progress manually if you prefer. You will be able to join a Facebook group where event ambassadors and challengers discuss their progress and share tips. There are fundraising incentives, too, with anyone raising £35 or more receiving a medal. Diabetes UK-branded caps and cycling jerseys will go to anyone raising £150 and £300 respectively.
