The National Marine Aquarium’s favourite Loggerhead Turtle, Snorkel…..in the shape of a cake was joined by the Lord Mayor of Plymouth to officially open the new Oak Furniture Land store on Coypool Retail Park on Thursday 9th April.

The ‘Snorkel’ cake took centre stage as the Lord Mayor presented the amazing confectionery creation to The National Marine Aquarium on behalf of the new Oak Furniture Land store.

Oak Furniture Land, the UK’s largest retailer of Solid Hardwood Furniture commissioned the life-size cake of Snorkel to celebrate the opening of their first store in Plymouth and to show their support for the UK’s largest aquarium. The Plymouth store stands at nearly 27,000 sq. ft., includes a mezzanine floor and has created seven new local jobs.

The store also features the new sofastore.com concession with all the latest sofa trends and over 75 different ranges of high quality sofas and over 3500 colour and size variations to choose from.  There is an exclusive designed sofa to suit all tastes and budgets.

Store manager Lee Millross, said: “This is our first store in Plymouth, and our ninth in the South West. We’ve created seven new local jobs and to celebrate we have some amazing offers in-store including up to 50% off selected items in our Spring Sale.”

The Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Councillor Michael Fox said:  “This new Oak Furniture Land store is a welcome investment in terms of job creation, and is a nice addition to the choice of shops for local residents. I was delighted to open the store alongside Snorkel the turtle!”

Josh McCarty, Head of Marketing at the National Marine Aquarium said: “As the UK’s largest Aquarium we thank Oak Furniture Land for their donation and welcome them to Plymouth.

"The Snorkel cake was a nice gesture to highlight the marine conservation work that we do and we hope to sell slices to raise money for the charity. We carry out marine conservation projects in the UK and internationally and educate 30,000 school children each year on curriculum based subjects.

"Snorkel washed up at Lands End in Cornwall suffering from epilepsy and has only 30% vision in one eye so is medicated daily by our animal husbandry team.”

The amazing cake sculpture of Snorkel was created by acclaimed local South West based cake artist Christine Jensen and CakeBomb. The cake is lemon sponge with lemon butter cream and contains:       80 eggs, 20 kg of fondant icing, 44 packs of marshmallows, 22 boxes of rice cripes, 40 lemons, 12 kg of butter creams,15 packets of digestive biscuits and it took two people 80 hours to make Snorkel!
