Women encouraged to train together for Race for Life

You’ll never walk alone…or run alone in this case, thanks to a new group for woman in training for the Race for Life.

Plymouth City Council has organised a ten-week training programme suitable for women of all fitness levels and abilities, from those who have never raced before to experienced 5K runners, to help get in shape for the charity run.

Classes begin on Monday 14 April and will take place at various locations across the city at a range of times, including mornings and early evenings to enable woman to prep for the big race day.

Louise Kelley, Sports Development Unit Manager for the Council, said: “We are proud to be supporting this worthy cause, as many of us will know someone affected by cancer. These groups are aimed at complete beginners so if you fancy having a go at running but don't know where to start then why not come along. Our qualified leaders will be able to support you no matter what your ability. These sessions are a great way for women to train together and reach their personal fitness goals for a good cause.”

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life is a charity run or walk for woman to raise money for cancer research in the UK. This year the race will take place on Sunday 23rd June starting and ending at the Plymouth Hoe.

Laura Gibson, Cancer Research UK’s South West Events Manager, said: “There are over 200 cancers and we won’t give up until we find cures for them all. It’s fighting talk, and we mean every word we say. Cancer, Plymouth is coming to get you.”

“Women of all shapes, sizes, ages and levels of fitness take part in Race for Life. They come from different backgrounds and walks of life but they are united by their absolute determination to take on cancer and beat it.

“Race for Life is non-competitive. It’s not about being fit or fast. Most women are able to walk 5k in an hour while chatting and having fun.”
