Free community composting courses for growers of Local Food taking place in Devon

Seize the Moment, a not for profit registered company, have teamed up with the Community Composting Network to deliver a course aimed specifically at local food growers to get them composting as well as growing.

The courses, which take place in a variety of locations across the UK, aim to get food growers to capture the nutrients and organic matter in local food and garden waste, and return that goodness to the soil where it's badly needed. It will also help them use their own compost to make growing media for sowing and planting up.

The Composting courses will comprise of three sessions and will teach those who attend many skills to help their local not for profit organisations, community groups and social enterprises.

Growers will learn how to do ‘hot composting’ which kills weeds, seeds and pathogens so you can have faith in the compost you are producing. You’ll also be shown how to test your soil and your compost. Equipment will be available for you to use to help you kick start your project.

Steve Kirkby, New Shoots, trainee, Rotters Community Composting, Liverpool, said:

" I thoroughly enjoyed the course and got a lot from both the course tutor and the other participants. They were a really good bunch. The course was extremely well structured and the accompanying course material was as good as I have ever encountered”

The free training places are limited to ten per course and priority will be given to groups sending more than one person along to all three days of the training so that the new composting practices are well embedded in the trainees’ organisations.

The nearest course location to Plymouth is taking place at the Seize the Moment's Happy Café in Westward Ho!, Devon.
