Leading retirement housebuilder Churchill Living has officially started construction on a new development in Exmouth, which was recently named one of The Sunday Times Best Places to Live 2026.

Located on the former Jewson Builders’ Merchant site on Lower Fore Street, the new development will deliver 54 one- and two-bedroom apartments, alongside an exclusive collection of six two-bedroom retirement cottages, thoughtfully designed for the over 60s.

The Lodge is ideally positioned in the heart of the town, within easy reach of Exmouth’s High Street, cafés and essential amenities and less than a mile from the seafront and its expansive golden sandy beach.

The development has been carefully designed to offer choice and flexibility for downsizers. Alongside the apartments, the six retirement cottages provide an alternative for those seeking greater independence while still being part of a like-minded community. The cottages will feature private gardens and dedicated parking as well as access to a 24-hour Careline support system. Owners will also have the option to join the wider Lodge community and enjoy its social activities, should they wish.

Also recognised by The Telegraph as one of the best places to downsize, Exmouth offers an exceptional setting for later living. Situated at the start of the Jurassic Coast where the River Exe meets the sea, the town combines natural beauty with convenience, lying just 10 miles from Exeter.

Owners will be able to enjoy a vibrant town centre with a mix of high street names and independent retailers, as well as access to scenic outdoor destinations including Woodbury Common, the historic Woodbury Castle and the Exe Estuary Trail, which is popular with walkers, cyclists and birdwatchers. The area is also well known for its water sports, including sailing, kayaking and kitesurfing.

Jo Ridehalgh, Marketing Lead for Churchill Living South West, said: “We are delighted to have started construction on our new development in Exmouth, a location that continues to grow in popularity and has rightly been recognised as one of the best places to live in the UK. This development will offer a fantastic mix of high-quality apartments and cottages, giving buyers real choice in how they downsize, whether they are looking for a low-maintenance lifestyle or something that offers a little more independence.

“With its beautiful coastline, strong sense of community and excellent local amenities, Exmouth is perfectly suited to the over 60s. We’re excited to bring a development to this vibrant seaside town and to welcome our first Owners in 2027.”

Prospective buyers are encouraged to register their interest early to receive updates and be among the first to secure a home in this highly desirable location.
