New attractions on the cards for Royal William Yard

A new interiors and lifestyle shopping destination – complete with elegant tea room and magical ‘secret garden’ with spectacular views over Firestone Bay – is all set to open on 17 July at Residence 1, Royal William Yard. Without doubt this is sure to be the ‘jewel in the crown’ for this hidden maritime development, which is already vibrant with beautiful new residences, cafés, bars and restaurants (including Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage Canteen and Deli) and will undoubtedly create an even greater buzz for Plymouth’s hottest regeneration area.

The magnificent four-storey Grade II* Listed period property – now known as ‘ONE’ Royal William Yard – is the latest former Royal Navy building to be refurbished and given a new lease of life. Featuring an established interior designer, a soft furnishing specialist, a contemporary art gallery, bathroom design studio, gift shop, sweet emporium, jewellery designer and luxury tea room, ONE Royal William Yard has been elegantly fitted out from floor to ceiling to create an unparalleled ambience of grandeur and opulence. The location will also act as a beautifully romantic setting for weddings and other private events within the property’s ‘Secret Garden’, with panoramic views across to Drake’s Island providing a stunning backdrop.

Husband and wife team Trevor Horswell and Marie Hewitt set up Residence One Property Management Ltd in order to turn their vision of combining the talents of this creative pool of interiors and lifestyle specialists all under one roof into reality.

Marie says: “We wanted to really add a totally new concept to the leisure experiences already on offer here at Royal William Yard, and we hope that what we have created will help people view this area as a destination to come and enjoy a memorable day out as well as somewhere to buy beautiful interiors and gifts.

“We can’t wait to welcome the first visitors through our doors and we hope that they’ll love it as much as we do. We have worked tirelessly to transform the building in a sympathetic manner and to restore this stunning property to its former glory.”

Marie and Trevor are also establishing Will’s, an elegant tea room in which to while away the hours in comfort while admiring the decor and sampling delicious light lunches, cakes and luxurious Devon cream teas. Will’s will utilize the freshest of local produce – with many items coming direct from the property’s very own nursery garden.

In addition, the ground floor art gallery, Art Source, will rival the best in the area, offering a changing vista of the very finest UK contemporary work from leading, nationally acclaimed artists.

Marie continues: “There will always be something new to see here, from watching the changing seasons in our magical garden, to viewing the latest exhibition on show in the gallery or browsing new ranges of furniture, there will be something for everyone to enjoy whatever the weather. Meanwhile, Will’s tea room will offer an unrivalled experience that will take you back to a time of relaxed refinement, backed by excellent service but with plenty of exciting contemporary twists.”

One Royal William Yard is steeped in the history of Plymouth and Royal William Yard, with hallways and landings adorned with framed memorabilia acting as a poignant reminder of its impressive heritage.

One Royal William Yard opens 7 days a week during the summer months – but visitors are advised to check online for future seasonal opening times.
