71% of people in South West are putting themselves at risk of contracting flu, according to recent research by Well Pharmacy

Of the 71% who haven’t had the flu jab administered this winter, 54% stated that they didn’t feel as though they needed it and one in ten were too scared of needles to have the procedure undertaken.

In fact, more than 30% of people in South West  cited ‘chicken soup’ and a ‘duvet day’ as the most effective way of ‘curing’ the flu.

Rachael Sharples, Healthcare Development Manager at Well Pharmacy, said: “Each year, it’s estimated that flu results in more than 30,000 hospital admissions and up to 1.164 million GP consultations. Therefore it’s incredibly important for South West residents to take steps to beat the bug this winter. One of the easiest ways to tackle flu, particularly for those in at risk categories*, for example the elderly, pregnant women and those with diabetes, is to get a flu jab for free from your local pharmacy.

“The flu jab is nothing to worry about; you’ll be asked a few questions to check the flu jab is suitable for you before having your jab administered by an accredited pharmacist in the privacy of the consultation room. As an independent pharmacy situated at the heart of your community, we will be able to help with all flu-related enquiries during the Christmas period.”

There are other techniques to use during December to help ward off flu. Well Pharmacy’s top five tips are:

1. Wash your hands regularly with soap and warm water
2. Get plenty of sleep and stay in shape
3. To prevent spreading germs, use a knife and fork, not your fingers
4. Stay off work if you’re feeling ill; don’t be a martyr
5. Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and protein to boost your immune system
