Fifty handpicked men formed this secret army. They attacked, kidnapped, ambushed and killed Germans across Europe during the Second World War.

After the fall of Dunkirk in 1940, elite special units were formed into a secret army to make mayhem and sow fear into the hearts of those guarding the enemy shore.

They were endorsed at the highest level by Churchill. These cross channel raiders were the thorn in the side of the German army for two years. In almost twenty daring missions to enemy-occupied Brittany and Normandy, they seized code books and ciphers, ransacked barracks and ambushed patrols. Their story is one of courage, patriotism, friendship and ultimately tragedy.

• An extraordinary account of Britain’s Band of Brothers, each a handpicked volunteer.

• Foreword by Major General Julian Thompson CB, OBE

Plymouth author Tom Keene is winner of the Royal Marines Historical Society award and a member of the Royal Historical Society.

A former investigative journalist and television producer, his PhD explored the back-corridor Whitehall rivalries surrounding the early days of SOE in the Second World War. He was historical consultant to both a major BBC television documentary and to Paddy Ashdown’s accompanying definitive account of the iconic ‘Cockleshell Heroes’ raid on German shipping in Bordeaux harbor by kayak in 1942.

He has written a series of thrillers, one of which, Spyship, was serialised by BBC television. He is also the author of Cloak of Enemies (The History Press).
