Theatre Royal Plymouth announces summer season

This summer Theatre Royal Plymouth welcomes the best of musicals, drama, dance and family entertainment to the South West. Musical favourites such as highly anticipated Sister Act and the opening of Crazy For You starring Caroline Flack and Tom Chambers.

Critically acclaimed plays such as National Theatre’s production of Hedda Gabler, which will open its UK Tour in Plymouth, and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time take to the stage this spring.

Theatre Royal Plymouth continues to strengthen and grow its reputation for producing with Lies, a co-production with Belgian company Ontroerend Goed. The Funky Llama Festival, an inclusive event for adults with different abilities produced by Theatre Royal Plymouth, returns to Plymouth Hoe this summer with an exciting mix of bands, DJs, dance and drama from all across the UK.

Hofesh Shechter
Previewing on Thursday 1 & Friday 2 June
An exciting opportunity to see brand new work by Hofesh Shechter at one of just two previews ahead of the World Premiere in Paris. In this new full-length evening in a score which he composes for a group of spirited and eclectic instrumentalists who play on stage alongside his tribe of world class dancers.

The Sound of Mucus
Sunday 4 June
Count Arthur Strong pays tribute to one of the best musicals he can remember in his largest tour to date.

Not Dead Enough
Monday 5 – Saturday 10 June
Not Dead Enough was the third novel in the award winning Roy Grace series and now becomes the third play Peter James’ his box office smash hit and critically acclaimed stage franchise.

Fantastic Mr Fox
Tuesday 13 – Saturday 17 June
A brand new production of Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox is family fun at its finest. A tale of greed, pride and the power of friendship, this flagship production for the Roald Dahl 100 celebrations promises a huge theatrical feast with live music and songs.

Buddy - The Buddy Holly Story
Monday 19 – Saturday 24 June
Buddy - The Buddy Holly Story tells the enduring tale of the musical icon’s meteoric rise to fame and his final legendary performance before his tragic and untimely death at the age of 22. In 18 short months the Texas-born boy revolutionized the face of contemporary music influencing everyone from The Beatles to Bruce Springsteen.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time
Monday 26 – Saturday 1 July
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is adapted from Mark Haddon’s best-selling book by Simon Stephens and directed by Marianne Elliott. The show received seven Olivier Awards in 2013, including Best New Play, Best Director, Best Design, Best Lighting Design and Best Sound Design and five Tony Awards on Broadway including Best Play. 

Sister Act
Monday 3 – Saturday 15 July
Based on the smash hit movie starring Whoopi Goldberg and Maggie Smith, Sister Act
tells the hilarious story of Deloris Van Cartier, a disco diva whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a murder.

Gangsta Granny
Wednesday 19 – Sunday 23 July
It’s Friday night and Ben knows that means only one thing – staying with Granny! Gangsta Granny is written by David Walliams went straight to number 1 in the children’s book charts and his books have been translated into no fewer than 30 languages.

The Play That Goes Wrong
Monday 24 – Saturday 29 July
Fawlty Towers meets Noises Off in this multi-award winning West End smash hit. As the accident prone thesps battle on against all the odds to reach their final curtain call, hilarious results ensue!

Funny Girl
Tuesday 1 – Saturday 5 August
Funny Girl brought global fame to Barbra Streisand 50 years ago and boasts some of the most iconic songs in film and theatre history, including People and Don’t Rain On My Parade. This musical tells the story of Fanny Brice, whose vocal talents and comedic ability see her rise from Brooklyn music hall singer to Broadway star.

The Wedding Singer
Tuesday 8 – Saturday 12 August
It’s 1985. Hair is huge, greed is good and rock-star wannabe Robbie Hart is New Jersey's favourite wedding singer. When his own fiancée dumps him at the altar a seriously bummed out Robbie makes every wedding as disastrous as his own.

Crazy For You
Thursday 17 – Saturday 26 August
High energy, high kicking and gloriously glamorous, Crazy for You is the ultimate feel-good musical. Opening at Theatre Royal Plymouth and starring Tom Chambers and Caroline Flack it features a fabulous score from the Gershwin brothers’ songbook including I Got Rhythm, They Can’t Take That Away From Me, Nice Work If You Can Get It.

Babe The Sheep-Pig
Thursday 31 August – Saturday 2 September
Adapted from Dick King-Smith’s much-loved children’s novel which inspired the Oscar-winning 1995 film, Babe, The Sheep-Pig will be brought to life on stage in an enchanting new production.

Around The World In 80 Days
Tuesday 12 – Saturday 16 September
A hugely talented cast of eight play over 125 characters in this imaginative, high-spirited escapade including six trains, five boats, four fights, three dances, two circus acts and an elephant.

Beautiful The Carole King Musical
Tuesday 19 – Saturday 23 September
Beautiful – The Carole King Musical tells the inspiring true story of Carole King’s remarkable rise to stardom. Featuring classic songs such as Take Good Care of my Baby, You’ve Got a Friend and Locomotion.

Hedda Gabler
Monday 2 – Saturday 7 October
Following a sold-out run at the National Theatre’s Lyttelton Theatre, the NT will begin a UK tour of its acclaimed production of Hedda Gabler on 2 October 2017, opening at Theatre Royal Plymouth.

Golem
Wednesday 10 – Saturday 13 May
Drawing on the myth of The Golem – the story of a man who fashions a creature out of clay to work for him, 1927 has created an original production exploring man and his machines.

Ready or Not
Tuesday 16 – Saturday 20 May
Award-winning Kali Theatre presents a compelling new political thriller by Naylah Ahmed. A retired teacher takes an idealistic young Muslim man hostage and embarks on a dangerous game of hide and seek with the truth.

A Brimful of Asha
Tuesday 23 – Saturday 27 May
This hilarious show created and performed by Complicite-associate Ravi Jain and his real mum Asha, sees them share the stage to tell this true story of generational culture clash.

Lies
Wednesday 7 – Saturday 24 June 2017
Following the popularity of Fight Night, Lies is the latest interactive show from the internationally acclaimed Ontroerend Goed. This marks our tenth co-production with them, one of the most dynamic, innovative and exciting theatre companies in the world.

A Theatre Royal Plymouth People’s Company Production, Scenes from an Execution is a darkly humours and provocative play that asks fundamental questions about the role of an artist, the State and the obligation of both to reflect the truth.

Playhouse
Wednesday 5 – Saturday 8 July
Playhouse gives primary school teachers the opportunity to direct a specially commissioned play by one of the country’s leading playwrights, with professional support from the Theatre Royal Plymouth.

The Blue Road
Wednesday 23 – Saturday 26 August
A Theatre Royal Plymouth Young Company Production, The Blue Road is a new play by acclaimed writer Laura Lomas exploring memory loss, living in the aftermath and our capacity to begin again.

The Narwhal/Ensemble
Wednesday 12 – Saturday 15 July
This year’s Lab Company present a brand new show. The Lab Company is Theatre Royal Plymouth’s premier training and development programme for early career artists living and working in the region. This show marks the culmination of a year-long residency at the theatre.

Bin Laden: The One Man Show
Thursday 20 - Saturday 22 July
This incendiary, intelligent debut from Knaïve Theatre provides a fresh perspective, creating a space for debate and dialogue.

Groomed
Monday 24 – Wednesday 26 July
Three gripping narratives show how a story can save your life. Groomed was the winner of three awards at Brighton Festival Fringe 2016 including Outstanding Theatre and Best of the Festival.

The Bearpit
Thursday 27 – Saturday 29 July
Weaving movement, original music and text into a two-person show, Kopfkino’s debut piece interrogates what we tell ourselves to be true versus the reality raging beneath the surface.

Funky Llama Festival 2017
Saturday 10 June, Plymouth Hoe
Funky Llama Festival is back this summer bursting onto Plymouth Hoe with an exciting mix of bands, DJs, dance and drama from across the UK. This event is a totally inclusive event that is programmed by our differently abled Driving Force steering group. Funky Llama challenges stereotypes and celebrates the creative talents of adults with different abilities.
