Devon Air Ambulance launches “Comfort at Christmas” appeal to bring warmth and care to patients in need
As the festive season draws near, Devon Air Ambulance is calling on the community to support its Comfort at Christmas appeal, a campaign designed to bring warmth, dignity, and compassion to patients facing time-critical emergencies this winter.
Mark Hawley, Operations Manager and Pre-hospital Paramedic at Devon Air Ambulance, shares the heartfelt message behind the appeal:
‘When we arrive at the scene of an emergency, our priority is always to deliver specialist critical care. But we also do everything we can to ease suffering. A little comfort and compassion can make a big difference not just to the patient but also to their family and loved ones around them.’
The charity, which receives no direct government funding, relies entirely on the generosity of supporters to continue its lifesaving work. This winter, donations will help fund essential items that provide warmth and comfort to patients during the coldest months, including:
- Fleece Blanket offering immediate comfort and care
- Heated blankets that automatically warm up during transport
- Blizzard blankets to fully wrap around and protect patients
- Scoop stretchers to lift patients off freezing ground
- Weather shelters to shield from harsh conditions
- Warming fluid for blood products, ensuring IVs are gentle and comfortable
These items may seem simple, but they are powerful tools in delivering compassionate care. The campaign was inspired by stories like Zoe’s, a patient seriously injured in a road traffic collision. A bystander’s act of kindness - offering a duvet - made a lasting impact in her moment of need.
‘Whether you choose to sponsor a single item or a full Comfort Kit,’ says Mark, ‘your gift will help us wrap patients in warmth and compassion this winter. Every contribution helps us deliver comfort when it’sneeded most.’
