A complex of holiday cottages built on the site of a Victorian grain and timber mill in North Devon are set to return to their historic roots following a six-figure funding package from Lloyds Bank.

Husband and wife Jackie and Jonathan Gillbrook used the funding support to purchase Orford Mill Holiday Cottages and have reverted the business back to the mill’s original name of Town Mills as described in the history books.

Town Mills featured in Henry Williamson's novel ‘Tarka the Otter’ and has since been converted into seven self-catering cottages available to guests throughout the year. The smallest cottage sleeps three people, with the largest able to cater for up to 12 guests.

The family-run business has outlined its expansion plans which include converting the vast land adjacent to the cottages into glamping pods with the installation of 6 – 9 geodesic domes ready for guests to enjoy this summer.

Situated on the bank of the River Torridge, the new owners also plan to offer guests and visitors the rights to fish on the river frontage against the backdrop of the Devonshire countryside.

The cottage site also features an indoor heated swimming pool, games room and play area, along with a tea room, which is currently being converted into a shop and reception for guests and visitors.

Commenting on the new ownership and growth plans, Jackie Gilbrook believes that by unlocking a number of “hidden gems”, the holiday cottages can offer a real appeal to new and existing guests in the months and years ahead.

Jackie said: “Town Mills is steeped in local and fictional history and the opportunity to breathe new life into the business is an exciting opportunity for Jonathan and me.

“Since the pandemic, the demand for staycations has increased significantly – especially here in this beautiful part of North Devon. We hope that our ambitions plans to expand the holiday cottages and the surrounding grounds will offer our guests a more inclusive experience and make their getaway that bit more special.”

The outgoing owners of more than 20 have retired due to ill health with Jackie and Jonathan Gilbrook taking ownership from January 2022.

Tim Gall, relationship manager at Lloyds Bank, said: “The new owners are incredibly passionate about their plans for the future of Town Mills and we’re pleased that we’ve been able to help them achieve their dream of purchasing the holiday cottages.

“The holiday rental market has continued to expand in the last 18 months with another summer of staycations across the South West on the cards. With many Brits looking to the region’s idyllic countryside for their holiday plans, it’s an exciting time for property purchases and I wish Jackie and Jonathan every success.”
