Chief Petty Officer, Steve Pointon and his yacht, Tikka, are visiting Plymouth on Tuesday 16th August as they continue the final legs of his round-UK Tikka’s Travels sailing challenge to raise money for Action for Children.

World record breaking sailor, Jeanne Socrates, will join the crew in Plymouth with a group from Action for Children’s Green Ark and Manor Street children’s centres also visiting the yacht.  After setting a target of £10,000, the total has now sailed well past £16,000 with just a week to go.

Steve (50) from Cheddar said: “It’s a massive honour to have Jeanne Socrates join us at Plymouth as she is preparing to sail around the world again in the autumn.  She is the perfect sailor to see us home and I can’t wait to meet up with her again.  I’m also really looking forward to meeting the families and staff from the Green Ark and Manor Street children’s centres as they are what drive us every day to raise money and awareness for Action for Children.”

Green Ark and Manor Park children’s centres in Plymouth play an essential role in giving children and families the early support they need.  They are open to the whole community and work in partnership with other agencies such as health visitors, midwives and local schools.

Sally Stopporton, service coordinator for the children’s centres said:  “We’re delighted to be meeting the Tikka crew as we want to thank them for taking on such a challenge for Action for Children.  It’s been a brilliant effort and to smash their target by thousands of pounds is a great achievement.  To be able to meet Jeanne Socrates will also be a huge inspiration to our families.

“She’s already the oldest woman to sail solo around the world and is aiming to be the oldest person when she sets sail in the autumn, we’re all really looking forward to meeting her.”
