Plymouth Life Centre has been shortlisted for the UK’s most important awards in water safety in recognition of its dedication to keeping the public safe around water.

The centre on Mayflower Drive in Plymouth, beat competition from across the UK to be selected as one of the finalists for the prestigious Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) and IQL UK Awards 2016.

The awards recognise and celebrate the vital contribution that centres make to water safety and drowning prevention. Plymouth Life Centre has been nominated for the Single-Site Approved Training Centre Award for its commitment to training and developing pool lifeguards, as well as for its work in promoting water safety in the local community.

The centre has more than 3,000 children engaged in swimming lessons, all completing elements of water safety. It also runs a number of junior lifesaving classes. It is currently working alongside Plymouth City Council and the local police to introduce a water safety programme highlighting the dangers of tombstoning around the local coastline.

“We have been overwhelmed by the quality of entrants to this year’s awards and congratulate Plymouth Life Centre on reaching the finals. The awards showcase some of the fantastic work being done to save lives, raise awareness and prevent drowning in and around pools,” says Martin Symcox, Director of IQL UK.

The winners will be announced at the RLSS UK & IQL UK Awards 2016, held on Friday 1 July at Staverton Park in Daventry.
