When returning to work after the festive season it is easy to forget that your self-assessment tax return deadline is less than month away.

ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) is reminding everyone who completes an online tax return to make sure the deadline isn’t forgotten when catching up after the break.

Chas Roy-Chowdhury, ACCA head of taxation, said: “Everyone knows that when you are away from work for a couple of weeks it can take just as long to catch up and it’s easy for things to get missed or forgotten. If you are required to complete an online self-assessment tax return you need to make sure it isn’t one of those things.

“Despite the Chancellor announcing in March that the end of the tax deadline was coming, this isn’t the case yet. You still have to get your return in on time and HMRC will fine you if you are late, or submit incorrect information.

“Since the coalition government introduces changes to child benefit for high rate tax payers, thousands more people have been pulled into the self-assessment system.

"My advice would always be to seek the services of a Chartered Certified Accountant to make sure the information you are submitting to HMRC is correct. It’s better to be sure than to risk a fine.”
