Plymouth property agents Bruton Knowles has completed a short term deal which sees local charity Hugs from Henry taking over the former Vibes music store in Mayflower Street as a pop-up shop.

Mark Slade from the Lockyer Street firm was instructed on March 15 by client Burrington Estates to find an interim tenant for the building – due to make way for a new student accommodation scheme.

Mark said: “We agreed terms and the charity moved in last Friday - all within two weeks.”

The former Vibes music store opened in 1996 but closed in September last year.

Mark went on: “With upwards of 26,000 students in and around the city there is an insatiable appetite for student accommodation. It is changing the face of the city centre and dramatically altering the range of accommodation available.”

A 17-storey, 528 bed student unit will replace the 1950s vintage Mayflower House on Armada Way.

“And this is addition to schemes already under construction at Notte Street, Coburg Street and St Andrews roundabout to name but a few! Although there is some provision for retail in the plan the main driver is clearly the student accommodation element.”
