Hospital Radio Plymouth are ruling the wavelengths after taking gold at the National Hospital Radio Awards in Bristol.

Hospital Radio Plymouth beat off competition from more than 200 Hospital Radio stations to win the coveted Station of the Year award for the fourth time in seven years. Judges from the Hospital Broadcasting Association praised the diverse musical programming, the interaction with wards and described Hospital Radio Plymouth as “a credit to Hospital Broadcasting” and “in a league of its own”.

Hospital Radio Plymouth was established in 1969 and currently resides within the Derriford Hospital site, broadcasting 24 hours a day on 87.7FM. Along with a variety of speech-based programmes, the team of 60 music-loving volunteers compile an eclectic mix of musical styles, which reflects the diversity of their members (with nearly 80 years separating the oldest and youngest members).

Station Manager Andrew Hill, who took bronze in the Male Presenter of the Year category, said: “To be described as in a league of your own by radio professionals and leading healthcare figures is quite something.

"I am immensely proud of our team of volunteers who consistently deliver such a diverse range of engaging programmes for our audience to enjoy. To get this award for the fourth time in seven years is a tremendous achievement."

As a registered charity, the service is supported by fundraising and charitable donations. If you would like to donate, you can find out more at https://mydonate.bt.com/charities/hospitalradioplymouth
