Talk: In Conversation with Lauren Child, Children's Laureate

Children’s Laureate Lauren Child, MBE explores the magic of reading and writing with some of her best-loved characters including Clarice Bean, Ruby Redfort, and Charlie and Lola.

Child is one of today’s most highly regarded writers and illustrators for children and young teenagers. Her Charlie and Lola series for 2-5-year-olds was made into a BAFTA award-winning television show, while her Clarice Bean and Ruby Redfort detective novels sparked the imagination of young teenagers. Appointed Children’s Laureate in 2017, she says her mission is to get children excited about reading.

Multi-award winning, bestselling writer and artist, Lauren's first two books were published in 1999– I Want a Pet and Clarice Bean, That’s Me, and she won the prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal in 2000 for I Will Not Ever Never Eat a Tomato, the first of her Charlie and Lola picture books. Lauren published her first Clarice Bean novel in 2002 – Utterly Me, Clarice Beanwhich has since sold over 6 million copies worldwide.

In 2008 Lauren launched UNESCO’s ‘My Life is a Story’ Campaign for their Programme for the Education of Children in Need, and was named a UNESCO Artist for Peace in 2008, before being awarded an MBE for Services to Literature in 2010.
