Conquerors, Brides, Concubines: Interfaith sex and the construction of power in Medieval Iberia

Simon Barton, Professor of History, University of Exeter

Simon Barton works primarily on the political, social and cultural history of the Iberian Peninsula during the medieval period. He has published extensively on the aristocracy, chronicles and chroniclers, and Christian-Muslim relations, especially with regard to the peninsula crusading movement and the activities of Christian mercenaries in Muslim Iberia and North Africa. The topic of this evening’s lecture is based on his recent book, Conquerors, Brides, and Concubines: Interfaith Relations and Social Power in Medieval Iberia.
