Who is Robert Burns?

A Scottish icon, Robert Burns poems ranged from themes of nature, love, social injustice and morality. He was a fierce advocate for individualism and freedom from oppression and authority. His poem ‘A Man’s A Man for A’ That’, reflects his value for honesty and kindness over status, wealth and power. One of the few poets to be printed in Scot’s vernacular, the subject and rhythm of his poetry expresses the rich culture, joy and colour of Scottish culture and history.

Burns was a prolific author. Frequent themes were his passionate love for the women in his life and his anger at the inequality and social injustice he saw in the world around him. ‘The Character of a Ruined Farmer’ explores the hardships of rural life and he was a passionate advocate for democracy and parliamentary reform in order to counter the harsh control of the Church and State. His vision was very different; as in his poem ‘The Holy Night’ in which he describes a joyous gathering during which sermons are read and people feast on food and drink, laugh and are merry.

His poems are as relevant now as they ever were and it’s no surprise that people continue to come together to celebrate his life and works. His poetry brings out the essence of what it means to be human and Burns Night serves as a reminder of the importance of getting together, laughing, drinking and being merry – even (and maybe especially) when times are hard.
