People with a medical condition made worse by the cold could get help from Plymouth City Council's Healthy Homes scheme.

Grants are being offered for things like a new boiler, central heating, loft and cavity wall insulation or energy advice.

Studies have shown there is a link between living in cold or damp properties and the worsening of health conditions such as heart, lung or kidney conditions, diabetes, arthritis and asthma.

Cabinet Member for the Environment Councillor Brian Vincent said: "Living in a warm home is vitally important for people's health as well as their comfort. We have secured this money to help those most at risk from the cold and it could make a big difference to people's lives. I'd urge anyone who thinks they could be eligible for a grant to get in touch."

To qualify for the scheme people must be at risk of exacerbating a medical condition by living in a cold, damp home. Other criteria vary depending on the heating measures and applications will be assessed using a medical and property questionnaire.

For help with heating homes call the Low Carbon City Team on 307574 or email energy@plymouth.gov.uk.
