Unfortunately, as all of us Britons are aware, the Summer is slowly drawing to a close. We have but one August bank holiday left in the Sun, before September swipes in and brings the promise of Autumn with it. Before the leaves get crispier and fall from the trees, those dark nights and mornings, and the colder temperatures really take a hold, chances are you’ll want to make the most out of what little Summer we have left. Summer is all about fun in the sun, visiting the seaside and eating ice cream – and what better place to do that than Plymouth, one of the best seaside towns in the country? If you’re visiting Plymouth before the Summer ends, here are some top tips on how to make the most out of your time there, and some ideas on what you can do!

Do Some Research and Plan Your Trip in Advance

A lot of the time when we go on trips, we don’t plan ahead, and ultimately, we end up missing out on a lot of things, and wasting our time there by actively looking for things to do. If you wanted to sell your house quickly, what would you do? You’d go online and research what the best options are for a fast house sale to save you time. Of course, that’s just an example, but you’re only in Plymouth for a certain amount of time, so make the most of it. The point still stands.

So go online, and take a look at what Plymouth has to offer. You can find out if there are any deals on at local attractions for the end of the Summer, what events you might be able to attend, and even take a look at what the weather will be doing – as in this country we never quite know! By looking ahead, you’ll make sure that the time you spend in Plymouth rounds your summer off beautifully. Below are just a few ideas on how you could consider spending that time!

Visit Plymouth Hoe

It makes sense to start the suggestions list with Plymouth Hoe, one of the most iconic sites and experiences Plymouth has to offer. By standing at Plymouth Hoe, facing south on the limestone rise, you can see the entirety of Plymouth Sound, Mount Edgcumbe in Cornwall even Drake’s Island. The views are second to none, and it’s been used as a viewpoint for as long as anybody can remember. An amazing experience on a clear day, visiting Plymouth Hoe isn’t something that you want to miss out on.

As mentioned, you’re able to see Plymouth Sound when you’re standing at the Hoe viewpoint, so why not take it a step – literally – further?

Plymouth Sound is an astounding natural harbour, that welcomes water traffic and large navy ships alike. If you want to see it closer, and you’re up for an adventure, why not make the journey to the spot between Mount Batten Point and Andurn Point. While there, you’ll notice the changes in red and green sandstone on the cliffs, and will be able to observe faults in rocks that occurred millions of years ago. If geology is your thing, this is an experience not to be missed.

Go to the National Marine Aquarium

This is actually the largest aquarium in the UK, so whether you have little ones who’d love it, or you’re interested in under the sea life, it’s perfect for a day out – especially if the weather is a little less than summery!

You’re likely to find an array of sea creatures, from sharks to crustaceans, and get a glimpse of life under the sea, both near and far. That’s something that many aquariums can’t offer, so it’s well worth a visit.

The Plymouth Gin Distillery

You’ve probably noticed that gin is the drink of the moment, and if you’re into this trend, then Plymouth has the perfect excursion for you.

Last but not least, gin lovers rejoice, and visit the oldest operating gin distillery in the country. The Plymouth Gin Distillery has been up and running since as early as 1793, back in the days when it was exported around the world by the royal navy. It boasts a sweeter taste than London’s traditionally dry gin, so why not give it a go? While here you can admire the architecture, go on a guided visit, and even attend a tasting session. There really is something for everyone in Plymouth.
