Artist’s impressions of new crematorium revealed
The first artist’s impressions of Plymouth’s proposed new crematorium have been released.
The drawings, provided by architects Stride Treglown, show single-storey buildings nestled in green spaces with water pooled around the ceremony rooms. These images will be available for the public to view at consultation events beginning this week.
The Council plans to spend nearly £12m million on the site and facility which will allow the city to provide a modern crematorium that meets the need of bereaved families.
The consultation period begins on Friday 10 August will run until 14 September. The public will be able to attend events and also give feedback online.
Feedback from the consultation will inform final designs before a planning application is submitted later in the year.
Councillor Sally Haydon, Cabinet member for Customer Focus and Community Safety, said: “The new crematorium will bring our bereavement services into the modern era and we’re really pleased with the first artist’s impressions.
“We want this facility to be customer focussed so it is really important that the residents of Plymouth and the surrounding area give their feedback on the plans so that we can meet their needs appropriately.”
Consultation events will be taking place across the city. Officers will be on hand to discuss the proposals and answer any questions. A full list of consultation events is listed below:

The location of the proposed new crematorium is a 17-acre site on the eastern edge of the city, off Merafield Road near the Stag Lodge entrance to Saltram Park.
It will include two non-denomination ceremony spaces with flexible seating, waiting areas, offices and new cremators with the latest environmental protection equipment.
Reflective spaces will be created for memorialisation and scatterings alongside landscaping that embraces the local environment and ecology. It is also hoped that Plymouth’s first green burial option will be available at the new site.
As part of the plans, the Council’s existing sites at Efford and Weston Mill will continue to be active for burial and memorials with the chapels available for bookings.
