Work starts on Efford Playing Pitches

A much-needed makeover of Higher Efford Playing Pitches has begun.

Contractor Agripower is now on site with heavy machinery to transform the tired facilities and ensure that they are fit for future generations.

As part of the work, the two current junior surfaces will be fitted with better drainage whilst the disused field at the former Plym Valley View Primary School will be transformed into two mini soccer pitches.

Councillor Sue Dann, Cabinet member for the Environment and Street Scene, said: “I am pleased to see work get underway here at Higher Efford.

“Community sports facilities are crucial to our goal of encouraging more people to become active and I look forward to seeing people of all ages use this facility when it has finished.”

Higher Efford is just one of several pitches across the city to be improved as part of the Plymouth Plan for Playing Pitches.

In Central Park, the existing rugby pitch will be regraded and two junior pitches and an artificial cricket wicket while Bond Street will benefit from new surfaces to replace two existing poor quality pitches that have been out of action for some time due to water-logging.

The Plan for Playing Pitches, which is backed by the Devon Junior & Minor League, Sport England and the Football Association, will tackle an overall shortfall in playing pitch provision across the city as well as a shortfall in the quality of many of the existing pitches.
