Work starts on Central Park Skatepark

Work on the new and improved Central Park Skatepark has started.

Specialists Freestyle Skateparks and  have moved in to revamp the site and turn it into a destination facility, offering something for beginners, right through to professionals which could also host events and competitions in the future.

The old skatepark closed to the public on Monday and will reopen with a new look in April.

Councillor Patrick Nicholson, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Transport, Housing and Planning, said: “I’ve been very excited about this project so it is great to see spades in the ground.

“This really will be a fantastic facility for Plymouth and an exciting space for both new and experienced skaters and riders to hone their talents.”

As part of the makeover, the site will get bigger and better, adding a snake run which is popular with skaters and BMX riders. There will also be a training bowl for those less confident riders and skaters, and additional seating for spectators.

A “slappy kerb” and a “pole jam” will also be added after consultation from regular users as well as a free running area, amended to improve the flow between structures.

The improvements to the skatepark form just a small part of the wider Central Park improvements programme.

Included in the plan are a new café, adventurous and enchanting play areas, path upgrades, four new tennis courts, new cricket, rugby and junior football pitches complete with improved changing facilities and improvement to drainage across the park.

Currie and Brown will be lending their considerable project management experience to the delivery of several key elements of the improvements programme including the skate park, café and community sports hub.
