The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for heavy downpours across Devon on Bank Holiday Monday.

The warning is in place from 6am until 11.50pm on Monday 25 August.

Heavy rain is expected to affect many southern areas of the UK at times during Bank Holiday Monday, with strong winds a possible additional factor close to southern coasts.

Forecasters warn that there may be some impacts to holiday traffic and other outdoor activities.

Chief forecaster at the Met Office said: “A complex area of low pressure looks like bringing an unpleasant day's weather to much of the south on Monday.

“Rainfall amounts look like exceeding 20 mm quite widely, while a few places might see around 40 mm, so there will be a lot of surface water and spray on roads.

“The spray will probably be made worse by strong winds across some southern area; gusts to around 40 mph may occur at some coastal locations although this will depend on the exact  track of the low pressure.”

Forecast for today:

After a bright, chilly start, cloud will increase from the southwest. Whilst some places will stay dry, rain will reach western parts by late afternoon, extending to most parts later. Maximum temperature 18C.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday:

Persistent, often heavy, rain followed by showers on Bank Holiday Monday. Windy. A wet start, then turning drier, brighter on Tuesday, and continuing into Wednesday. However, further rain possible later.
