A roadshow organised by the Council will be heading to the city’s neighbourhoods as part of a campaign to give young people the low down on exciting construction jobs on offer in Plymouth.

It’s out of the office and onto the housing estates in a concerted effort to talk to youngsters about the skills they need and the doors that could open for them.

The roadshow includes taster sessions for young people to have a go at plumbing, plastering, decorating or carpentry along with the chance to talk to apprentices and advisors on what the steps are to get on the road to work.

The roadshow will be at the following community events:

  • Tuesday 5 August at Kit Hill Park, Barne Barton – Build a Pizza event.
  • Thursday 14 August Fun Day at Titchy Park, North Prospect Fun Day.
  • Sunday 28 September at Stonehouse Street Festival

More events are planned including for Honicknowle and Ernesettle during August and will be announced shortly.

The Council-led initiative aims to highlight the amazing opportunities in construction as well provide a comprehensive look at all career possibilities.

Businesses and skills providers have also teamed up with the Council to get the skills show on the road.

Council leader Tudor Evans said: “The summer holidays are an ideal time for this. Exams are over, young people have a bit of down time and a bit of space to think about what they really want to be, what skills they would like and to talk to the right people about what to do next.

“This is so important to us, we are going out to where young people live to talk to them, get them excited about the possibilities that are out there and hopefully inspire them to go for it.”

The roadshow aims to help lay the groundwork for an exciting new venture in September which will see the full launch of Plymouth Building, a Council-led partnership with the local building industry that aims to provide a steady stream of qualified motivated employees as well as give local people new opportunities to get skilled and move into great careers. More details will be available in a few weeks’ time.

As well as being heading out to housing estates across the city, a marquee highlighting construction opportunities will be at some of the popular events that attract thousands of people. Pop along on:

  • Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 August – outside the Holiday Inn on Fireworks night
  • Friday 15 to Sunday 17 August – Frankfort Gate for Flavourfest
  • Sunday 17 August – on the Hoe for the Megaride
  • Monday 25 to Sunday 31 August City Centre – a marquee on the Piazza

There is more in the pipeline also including a ‘meet the employer’ event to bring young people together with actual companies offering apprenticeships in building.
