One of Plymouth's best views will now be seen from the centre of London and across the country.

A gigantic picture of Plymouth Hoe, featuring the world-famous Smeaton’s Tower, will be powering into Paddington on a regular basis, thanks to a huge train wrap which shows off Britain’s Ocean City in all its glory.

Commuters heading out to the city will get a glimpse of what makes this city so great; the magnificent views, a stunning natural harbour and enviable quality of life.

The striking image measures approximately 14 metres long and over two metres high and has been wrapped around a front engine or power car that will be travelling across the whole of the First Great Western network, from London to Penzance, as well as into Wales, and all points in between.

Council Leader Tudor Evans said: “This is a great sight!  We want to let everyone know how great Plymouth – Britain’s Ocean City – is and there’s surely nothing better than to have our most iconic views on show right in the heart of the capital as well as all along the region.

“The launch of this wrap is just in time to catch the attention of people thinking of coming down to the West Country and check us out.

“First Great Western have done a fantastic job and it is great that they are supporting Plymouth with another national first.”

Amanda Lumley, Chief Executive Destination Plymouth said: “We’ve got our summer season off to a cracking start with the Figaro race and the jazz and Blues festival and of course MTV Crashes has really raised the excitement levels about Plymouth.

“Only last week Plymouth’s Book of Wonder was launched which is well and truly spreading the message of what a fascinating place Plymouth is.”

The work to wrap the giant vinyl was carried out by rail staff from Laira depot in the city. Mark Hopwood, managing director of First Great Western said:  “With the power car operating four train routes a day, this will provide as many as 2,000 every day the opportunity to travel on board the Plymouth Britain’s Ocean City branded train.

“When you consider the number of places this will pass through, it is safe to say thousands more will see this incredible image of Plymouth. This is the first time we have had a train wrap to promote a destination. Plymouth is a leading destination on our network and we are more than happy to help remind people what a great place it is – and to take the train for a visit.”
