A team of runners from Derriford Hospital’s Imaging department fought off tough competition from Trust colleagues to claim the title for this year’s Half Marathon Staff Cup Challenge, with an impressive average running time of 1 hour 39 minutes and 27 seconds!

The annual tournament pits teams from across the Trust against each other, with the team with the fastest five runners taking the prize. The challenge is open to all staff groups including nurses, junior doctors, consultant, naval personnel and support staff. This year’s teams included Pharmacy, Emergency Department, Imaging, Physiotherapy and Finance.

Accepting the trophy on behalf of the team, Rebecca Mingo, Clinical Technologist said: “It has been a great bonding experience and has introduced colleagues from a variety of disciplines and shift patterns, who might not normally meet, and united us in a shared goal.

“We are lucky to have so many members of staff who are passionate about taking on the challenge. After some encouragement, we entered ourselves as a team, and we were thrilled when we found out that we had taken first prize.”

This year sees Imaging win the trophy for the first time, with previous winners including Physiotherapy (2011), Paediatrics (2012) and Pharmacy (2013). The top five runners from the team were Rebecca Mingo, Stuart Medhurst, Andrew Gemmell (not pictured), Simon Jackson and Claire Nix, who were awarded the Challenge Cup by Ann James, Chief Executive.

Marking the staff success, Ann James, Chief Executive said: “The success of the Imaging team is inspiring and is testament to the fantastic team ethos of the department.

“Competition for the Staff Challenge Cup is always fierce, so I am sure that they will take great pride in their efforts and in prominently displaying the winners’ trophy. Congratulations to all the members of staff who took part.”
