This month's lunchtime talks and art bites at the Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery’s focus on Old Masters from one of its most historic collections plus Modern Masters from a significant exhibition.

On Tuesday 17 June, senior conservator Neil Wressell will give a presentation about 'A Royal Game'. This large-scale sculpture featuring Elizabeth I and Philip II of Spain playing an imaginary chess match has recently returned to the Museum and Art Gallery after more than 20 years on loan to Buckland Abbey.

The following Tuesday (24 June), Tate guide Alan Read will discuss the life and works of Pablo Picasso, who is widely acknowledged to be one of the best-known and most influential artists of the 20th century.

The famous Spaniard is featured in the Museum's major ‘Modern Masters in Print’ exhibition, which highlights how Picasso, Henri Matisse, Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol – four of the 20th century's greatest artists –  used the print as a medium for experiment and expression.

Both talks begin at 1.10pm and last for up to 45 minutes. Admission costs £2 per person and full details can be found online at www.plymouth.gov.uk/museumlectures

Prints in the historically significant Cottonian Collection will also be explored in a special art bite by the Museum’s Young Explainers on Wednesday 18 June.

The Young Explainers is a partnership scheme run by the Museum and Art Gallery and Plymouth University. Members of this year’s scheme will give an insight into the impressive skills of the printmakers featured in the collection and the important role that printmaking played in raising the public’s awareness and interest in art.

“The Young Explainers’ presentation will give a taste of the treasures contained within the Cottonian Collection,” said learning officer Sara Norrish. “It contains sculptures, furniture, oil paintings as well as Old Master and English drawings, and a selection of the fine prints. It’s a really fascinating collection.”

Art bites run from 1pm to 1.30pm. Admission is free and full details can be found online at www.plymouth.gov.uk/museumartbites
