Films: Starred Up (18) & The Zero Theorum

Starred Up (18)

A complex father/son relationship is viewed through a brutal depiction of prison life in Starred Up, a powerful and assured film from David Mackenzie. There are echoes of Scum and A Prophet in a riveting drama shot on location at Crumlin Road Gaol in Belfast. Jack O’Connell gives an extraordinary performance as Eric, a teenage young offender so aggressive and unpredictable that he is prematurely moved to an adult prison. His fellow inmates include Neville (Ben Mendelsohn), the father he hasn’t seen since he was five. Neville is caught between protecting him and punishing him, provoking an increasingly tense situation in which Eric fights to be true to himself.

The Zero Theorum

Terry Gilliam’s latest creation focuses on Qohen Leth (Waltz) a reclusive computer genius living in an undetermined future, who works as a programmer for the Orwellian Organisation Corporation ManCom. He resides in an ancient derelict church, awaiting a phone call that will give meaning to his life. When the mysterious ‘Management’ summons him to crack the Zero Theorem, a formula that could answer everything, Leth’s existence is set to change. With striking cameos from a gaudily dressed Matt Damon and a boisterous and hilarious Tilda Swinton acting as a virtual shrink, Gilliam fans will relish the return of the cult director in familiar dystopian territory.
