A spin-out company launched by a group of Plymouth University graduates is to release its first game for the iPhone and iPad.

Mutant Labs, which was originally based in the University’s Formation Zone, are this week launching a retro-inspired arcade game called Half-Inch Heist.

Building on their experience creating games for Moshi Monsters and the Gadget Show Live, the game sees players take on the task of rescuing a diamond from the evil Dr Puss’ security vault. Players must dodge fiendishly designed traps, survive swarms of enemies and defeat bosses to get the gem back, using only their finger.

Alex Ryley, Mutant Labs’ managing director, said: “We wanted Half-Inch Heist to feel like a classic arcade game, not just through the graphics and sound, but through the gameplay. There seems to be a trend of games for iOS toning down the difficulty level, and Half-Inch Heist has the peril and fury of the games we used to play. We also wanted to make a game that was free to play, but didn’t rely on a pay to win scenario.”

Mutant Labs was formed in 2009 by five people studying on the University’s BA Digital Art & Technology programme, and they were drawn together by their enthusiasm for innovative digital projects.

They have since forged a strong client base and creative network and have also been active in the local community, teaching at the university, sitting on the board of 'Designed in Devon' and spreading knowledge in youth workshops.

In their new game, the focus is on surviving as long as possible, however, players can earn ‘continues’ through completing levels or purchase them through the shop. Half-Inch Heist pays homage to the arcade games of old, with highly polished pixel art and a bespoke soundtrack from renowned production duo Baconhead.

The game is due for release on Thursday 24 January for iPhone and iPad, and for a trailer and more information, visit http://halfinchheist.com.
