Broadcasting legend Alan Whicker dies at 87

The journalist and broadcaster Alan Whicker has died at the age of 87 after suffering from bronchial pneumonia.

He died in the early hours of Friday morning at his home in Jersey.

Born in Cairo in Egypt in 1925, Whicker served in the British army during the Second World War.

After reporting for a newspaper from the Korean War, he went on to enjoy a hugely successful career as a broadcaster in television.

Beginning as a reporter for the Tonight programme, he became best known for his long-running documentary travel series, Whicker's World which ran from 1959 to 1988 on both the BBC and ITV.

The programme blended travelogue with investigative social commentary and drew audiences of millions.

Alan Whicker is survived by his partner of 40 years, Valerie Kleeman.
