If you're looking to improve your general fitness, then you might have difficulty deciding exactly what kind of activity to try. One popular option is to actually try three of them at the same time. The triathlon is a pursuit that's been popular for decades – and that's enjoyed a resurgence in recent times. But exactly why is it worth considering? Let's look at a few key reasons to take up the triathlon.

Sense of achievement

Taking on three disciplines at once might seem like a challenge. But with every great challenge comes the amazing sense of achievement that you get when you've made a success of it. For best results, it makes sense to try shorter events before making the switch to longer ones. That way, you can be sure that you will enjoy the triathlon before you commit to it.

Once you start taking the event more seriously, you can build up to serious distances. The further you're travelling, and the harder you're training, the more importance you'll attach to your gear. Running, swimming, and cycling tend to demand equipment of a particular kind. Look for specialised tri bike shoes, and avoid the painful blisters that come from inferior gear.

Become fitter (and look, too)

If you take up triathlon, you'll almost certainly get fitter – even if you were active before. A combination of activities will test your body in ways that no single activity can. You'll also get the mental stimulation that comes with switching disciplines midway through a single event.

You'll tend to suffer fewer injuries, because your musculature and skeletal system will be more generalised. Triathlon is a serious cardiovascular workout, and it's a form of cross-training that will naturally improve your all-around fitness. As a side benefit, you'll also tend to look better. While this might not mean getting absolutely shredded (unless you take the sport very seriously), the difference this makes to your confidence and self-esteem can be considerable.

You might get more from your triathlon if you pick an event and build up to it. That way, you'll be more likely to stick with your commitments, and build up your fitness every week. It's easier to find the motivation to train when you know you risk embarrassment if you fail to do it!

The social benefits of a triathlon are considerable. You'll make new friends and find a community. This, in the long run, will make you even more likely to stick with the sport, and to find it rewarding. For many, exercise is a solitary pursuit – but if you make it part of your social calendar, it can be much more enjoyable.
