Plymouth step closer to safety with win at Chesterfield

Plymouth boss John Sheridan will not want to take anything for granted yet but he could be forgiven a wry smile after his side produced a victory against the team that sacked him back in August.

Argyle's recent run of form had given them great hope that they would stave off the threat of relegation, only for doubts to surface again after their unfortunate last gasp defeat at Burton on Saturday.

Two first half goals - from Bristol City loanee Joe Bryan and Curtis Nelson - stunned Chesterfield who came into the game looking for three points in a late hunt for a play-off place.

The Spireites then began to take the initiative as they had to do. An own goal by Guy Branston in the 58th minute brought them right back into the game and thereafter Plymouth had to mount yet another rearguard action - a familiar mode for them recently. Despite the need for defensive focus, they continued to enjoy a few chances to launch attacks of their own on the break.

The Pilgrims' organisation and belief saw the game out and deservedly earnt them all three points to leave them in 17th place on 52 points for the season, and more crucially, four points clear of the relegation zone with two games to play.

With the bottom two teams, Aldershot and Barnet, both losing - Barnet in a tight game at Torquay - Argyle will now feel that they are very close to safety. One win in their final two games would guarantee it.
