Plymouth Games prove a big hit
Teams from across the city have been battling it out for sporting glory in this year’s Plymouth Games, hosted by the Council’s sports development unit.
More than 1,000 people took part in the event, launched in 2012 to build on the legacy of the London Olympics and promote sport in a fun way.
Friendly competitions were held throughout June and July in 13 different sports – badminton, basketball, football, golf, hockey, indoor athletics, indoor bowls, netball, rounders, table tennis, tennis, touch rugby and volleyball.
A number of businesses fielded teams, with groups of teachers and friends making up many of the others. Devonport Dockyard Employees Trust, Plymouth Community Healthcare, Plymouth Life Centre and Plymouth Community Homes entered teams in almost every activity.
Sports development co-ordinator Barry Mountstevens said: “The most popular activity this year was rounders, with more than 150 people coming out to compete at Central Park, which is a phenomenal turnout. We’ve heard lots of stories about how the event has reignited people’s passion for sport and mums and dads returning to sport after a period away – which is what this is all about."
Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith said: “We’re really pleased that so many people got involved in this year’s event – and back into a sport they used to enjoy. A big thank-you goes out to the event co-ordinators and sponsors for their support, not to mention a big well done to all the competitors who took part.”
