New Field Gun Sport in Plymouth
The Devonport Field Gun Association was originally formed to keep ex command field gunners in contact with each other since they ’Ran’ in the Royal Navy Inter Command Field Gun Competition at Earls Court, London. From its demise in 1999, however over the past several years we have developed a different close tie with the local community of Plymouth. Since our Museum was moved out of the Royal Naval Dockyard, at Plymouth, in 2011 we have set up a Heritage Center, with Museum, at Crownhill Fort, Crownhill, Plymouth which is where we are now based. You will see who and what we are, in this present day, by logging onto our website http://www.devonport-command-fieldgun.co.uk which shows our commitment to the community, look on our News page in various Posts. We are a Registered Charity, formed to disseminate the Origin & History of Royal Naval Field Gun along with other objectives.
We encourage & support all forms of field gun competition particularly with schools & youth groups, the Plymouth Cub Scout Movement being one. We have made wooden scaled down field guns & limbers for use within competitions for youth groups & schools, Several junior schools now have field gun rigs so that they can take part in the new community sport and are currently being trained in the ‘drill’, in Plymouth. Field Gun sport is a different, and new, form of ‘team’ sport from their usual physical training curriculum. We are presently supported by kind & generous sponsors Plymouth Community Homes (based at Prince Rock, Plymouth) along with enthusiastic backing & support from Plymouth City Council and the facilities of The Salvation Army (Devonport). Most recently we were awarded a covenant grant, a sum which exceeds £50,000, for our Junior/School Field Gun Initiative which means that we can now confidently, with financial security, produced the equipment, training, drill manuals and backup to school crews with their training and equipment maintenance. All our association members who carry out this initiative are unpaid volunteers giving their own time up for the community & new sport.
