Game on! Plymouth's friendly games set to return next month

Sports teams from across the city are being invited to take part in an Olympics-style competition hosted by Plymouth City Council’s Sports Development Unit.

The Plymouth Games were launched last summer to build on the legacy of London 2012 and promote sport in a fun way. More than 1,000 people competed in the inaugural event and the Council hopes even more will join in this year.

Friendly competitions will be held throughout July in 12 different sports – athletics, badminton, basketball, football, golf, hockey, netball, rounders, table tennis, tennis, touch rugby and volleyball.

The event is open to everyone – businesses, schools, community groups, social clubs and even just groups of friends – and there are gold, silver and bronze medals up for grabs, as well as a presentation evening with trophies for the overall winners. There are also prizes for the best dressed team, best supported team and most spirited team.

Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith said: “Whether you play for a work footy team or just fancy getting together with your mates to shoot some hoops, there’s nothing like a bit of healthy competition and this is a great, fun way to challenge yourselves.”

This year’s Plymouth Games will begin at Goals Soccer Centre on Sunday 7 July, where teams will battle it out on the pitch to finish top of the table. Other venues include Virgin Active’s Devonshire Health and Racquet Club, Central Park, Marjon, Brickfields, the Plymouth Life Centre and Boringdon Park Golf Club

The 2013 Plymouth Games are being sponsored by Plymouth Community Healthcare, Virgin Active, Plymouth Badminton Network, Armada Athletic Network, Plymouth Community Homes, Devonport Royal Dockyard Employee Trust and Plymouth Citybus.

If you would like to enter a team into the Games please download the booking form at www.plymouth.gov.uk/plymouthgames or call the sports development unit on 01752 307008.
