Morecambe 2

Ellison 28, Amond 83

Plymouth Argyle 1

Reid (pen) 27

Sky Bet Football League 2, Saturday 31 August 2013

A goal by Padraig Amond seven minutes from time gave Morecambe victory as Plymouth Argyle stumbled in what is already panning out to be a roller coaster season.

Argyle took the lead in almost identical fashion to the way they had against Rochdale seven days ago - through a Reuben Reid penalty after 27 minutes. However, unlike last Saturday, they were not able to hold on to a 1-0 lead; in fact, it lasted all of one minute before Kevin Ellison had equalised for the hosts.

Fielding an unchanged starting eleven for the third successive game, John Sheridan had every reason to feel upbeat going into the match. Argyle had done the double over the Lancashire side last season and with only one win to date, the Shrimps' had evident vulnerabilities.

Perhaps lifted by a thoroughly spirited effort in their midweek Capital One Cup defeat against Premier League Newcastle, Morecambe proved dogged opponents, though both sides enjoyed a share of possession and chances.

The Pilgrims will be disappointed not to leave the north west with something from the game. Sheridan did all he could to change the course of the match, bringing on substitute Maxime Blanchard for his first appearance of the season and later, both Andres Gurrieri and Tyler Harvey, but it was Morecambe who created and converted the vital late chance and took all three points.

Argyle must look ahead to Tuesday night's Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie against Cheltenham Town, the Greens second visit to the Gloucestershire side this season. They then meet Bristol Rovers at Home Park next Saturday for an important West Country derby.
