Sports teams from across the city are being invited to take part in an Olympics-style competition hosted by Plymouth City Council’s sports development unit.

The Plymouth Games were launched in 2012 to build on the legacy of the London Olympics and promote sport in a fun way. More than 1,200 people competed in the event last summer and the Council hopes even more will join in this year, with new activities on offer.

Friendly competitions will be held throughout June and July in 13 different sports – badminton, basketball, football, golf, hockey, indoor athletics, indoor bowls, netball, rounders, table tennis, tennis, touch rugby and volleyball.

The event is open to everyone – businesses, schools, community groups, social clubs and even just groups of friends. There are gold, silver and bronze medals up for grabs, as well as a presentation evening with trophies for the overall winners. There are also prizes for the best dressed team, best supported team and most spirited team.

Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith said: “The Plymouth Games are the perfect excuse to get together with your friends or colleagues and enjoy a bit of healthy sporting competition. It doesn’t matter whether you play for a team every week or just fancy a challenge with some mates – you’ll have great fun.”

This year’s Plymouth Games will begin at Goals Soccer Centre on Sunday 22 June, where teams will battle it out on the pitch to finish top of the table. Other venues include Central Park, Boringdon Park Golf Club, Hele’s Bri-Dome, the Plymouth Life Centre and the University of St Mark and St John.

The Games are being sponsored by Devonport Royal Dockyard Employee Trust, Faye Peddler Physiotherapist, Macron Store Plymouth, Plymouth Community Badminton Network, Plymouth Community Healthcare, Plymouth Community Homes, Tennis Plymouth and the University of St Mark and St John Sport.

The team entry cost for each event is £25.

You can enter as many events as you like but places are limited and will go on a first come, first served basis. For full details and to register a team visit www.plymouth.gov.uk/plymouthgames or call the sports development unit on 01752 307008.
