On a topsy-turvy day of some successful and other ultimately unsuccessful transfer deals, the summer window's deadline was reached at 11pm on Monday evening (2 September) with some major signings making it under the wire.

Arsenal finally re-paid their fans' patience with the signing of the German international Mesut Özil from Real Madrid for a club record-obliterating £42.4m. They also brought in the Italian international goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano on a season-long loan from Palermo.

Champions Manchester United captured long-term taget Marouane Fellaini from Everton in the nick of time. The Belgian midfielder will re-join his former manager at the Toffees, David Moyes.

Liverpool, Everton and West Brom also enjoyed a successful day's business.

Plymouth Argyle added two further players to John Sheridan's reinforced squad - the out-of-contract Hamza Bencherif and Wolves defender Jamie Reckord on a three-month loan.
