The global microchip shortage is wreaking havoc all over the world, as supply chain remains a huge problem. These tiny chips can be found in almost every electronic device we own, from our mobile phones to our cars, and even our refrigerators.

As the crisis continues, many car manufacturers have been forced to delay the release of new models that were due to come on the market.

Who is the shortage currently affecting?

According to Car Magazine, “the lack of chips means carmakers such as Jaguar Land Rover, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, Stellanis and the Volkswagen Group have been affected by supply issued leading to temporary shutdowns at some plants.” The latest news on the crisis shows no sign of subsiding, with car sales dropping rapidly due to the ongoing shortage.

Why is this happening?

In a nutshell, much like retail stores and the hospitality industry, the pandemic caused the car industry to temporarily close, which resulted in a smaller supply of microchips than usual. Alongside this, the demand for these chips soared as tens of thousands were required for the masses of employees who found themselves in sudden need of electronic equipment for remote working. Collectively this had all led to the perfect storm which has created the global microchip shortage.

What about the Skoda Fabia release?

Unfortunately this highly anticipated model has also been put on the back burner until such a time comes that we have an adequate supply of microchips to be fitted within these cars as required. Famously renowned as a reliable yet affordable model in Skoda’s range, many will be disappointed at the news of this delay. Unlike its competitors, the Fabia will not be available in any hybrid or electric options.

What alternative is there?

Despite the disappointing delay on the Fabia, all is not lost. Skoda has introduced an incredible new electrical vehicle across their range as an alternative. The Skoda Enyaq iV is the brand’s first ever all-electric SUV, available in models ENYAQ iV 60 Nav, ENYAQ iV 80, ENYAQ iV SPORTLINE. This is Skoda’s first fully electric SUV with a battery size offering an impressive WLTP combined range of up to 331 miles before need of a recharge. Complete with a stylish and confident exterior design, the car has already received a 5* review in WhatCar?.

How to make the most of your new vehicle?

As with any new car purchase, be sure to cover all bases by taking out all relevant insurance policies. Breakdown cover can protect you against hefty fees if you have an accident or your car stops working unexpectedly. GAP insurance is another great policy to consider when investing in a new car. With GAP cover, your insurance company would make a settlement for the value of the car at the time of a write off – meaning drivers can ensure they’re not left out of pocket if the worst happens!
