When we think about car technology in the future, it’s easy to start imagining floating cars and all sorts of other sci-fi inventions. However, much of the latest technology in development is centred on making car travel safer and easier. Below, we explore how exactly the technology in cars is improving.

Self-driving systems

The race to create a safe and efficient self-driving system is dominating the automobile industry. In the long term, the plan is to have driving completely automated – but there have already been small developments that you may not have noticed. Audi is already a flagship brand in this area, having implemented a cruise control system that can detect the vehicle travelling ahead of your automobile and automatically adjust the travelling speed from 0 to 155 miles per hour. Meanwhile, other manufacturers have developed sensors that can lead to automatic parking too.

Environmental advances

Transport became the largest carbon-emitting sector in the UK in 2016. And car manufacturers will need to make serious technological advances to improve their impact on the environment. Most of the environmental advances have been made through electric vehicles. These cars don’t have a combustion engine and don’t produce carbon emissions while in use. The main drawback is that they require electrical energy when charging. However, manufacturers are working on producing long-lasting batteries to improve their impact on the environment. This is especially important as the UK will be banning the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by at least 2035.

Predictive technology

Manufacturers are also looking into predictive behavioural technology to make driving safer. By implementing the latest telematics system you can get feedback on your driving habits. This covers how often you wear your seatbelt, your top speeds, your distance from other cars and other driving habits too. By utilising this feedback, you’ll then be able to improve the quality of your driving.

The next 10 years

Driverless cars are the end goal for many manufacturers. The overwhelming majority of crashes are caused by human error. Naturally, manufacturers and governments are focusing on removing this issue by automating much of driving. This is still many years off, but it remains one of the main goals in the future.

The automobile industry is constantly innovating. And by following the trends above, you can enjoy some of these benefits when you next upgrade your car.
