Wheelchair rugby players from Plymouth and Cornwall will be taking on the might of the national Paralympic team at the Plymouth Life Centre on Saturday 2 February.

The British squad, which includes players who competed at London 2012 as well as hopefuls for Rio 2016, will be testing its skills against the Plymouth Life Centre-based West Country Hawks and the Cornish Pirates.

Organised by the Hawks with support from the Council’s sports development unit and Everyone Active, the event will be an opportunity for people to watch and meet some of Britain’s best wheelchair rugby players, learn more about the sport and find out how they can get involved.

Often nicknamed ‘murderball’, wheelchair rugby is a no-holds-barred contact sport full of speed and physical determination. Games are played over four eight-minute quarters and a goal is scored when a player carries the ball across the goal line.

Everybody has a vital role to play on the court – this is ensured using a classification system based on muscle function and strength. Classes range from 0.5 to 3.5 and a team of four players must total eight points or less during play.

Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith said: “We’re really pleased to be supporting the West Country Hawks and this event. Wheelchair rugby is fast paced and very physically demanding, but it's also fun and exciting – and a great way for people with disabilities to stay fit and active. Whether you’re interested in playing or just want to see the national team in action, you’re guaranteed a great afternoon.”

The event will start at 3pm and finish at 7pm. If you’re not able to make it on the day but want to know more, or you’re interested in joining the West Country Hawks or volunteering, contact Chris Perkins, head coach on 07766 314262 or email chris.cr@homecall.co.uk
