Around 1,000 bags of donations have been collected and are waiting to be sorted through and distributed to the families affected by the Clowance Street fire.

Since the fire, kind hearted members of the public have literally been flooding Devonport with donations to the families affected, some of whom have lost everything in the blaze.

Devonport based community groups along with members of Plymouth City Council’s neighbourhood team now need volunteers to take part in a big sort day on Friday 3 July at Stirling House, Honicknowle, between 10am to 3pm.

Clint Jones from Devonport Live said: “We have been overwhelmed with donations and the team of volunteers has been working tirelessly to sort through them and making sure that families are getting access to what they need. What we really need now is good quality kitchen items – pots, pans, utensils. The items you need to make a home cooked meal. The community groups involved would again like say a huge thank you to the generous donations they have already received and remind people that clothing donations are not required anymore.”

Families are able to use the free shop run by local volunteers that has been set up in George Street to access clothing, food, toiletries and small household items that have already been donated.

Councillor Chris Penberthy, Cabinet Member for Co-operatives and Housing said “We have been blown away by the sheer number of donations that have been received. Some of the families affected have been left with nothing. It’s important now we sort through what has already been donated to find out things families now need to help them get settled.

“We aspire to be a fairer city where everyone does their bit; the public’s reaction to the Devonport fire has been an example of this.  The sorting day provides another opportunity for people to do their bit to help the Clowance Street families.”
