The family car doesn’t typically have a reputation of being fun to drive in any way, shape or form. But, with the saloons, hatchbacks and SUVs of today becoming more stylish, fun and easy to drive, there are a number on the market that are challenging the stereotypical boxy, clunky, family car styles of yesteryear. Here are a few of our favourites.

Ford Focus RS

Described as the ultimate five-door hatchback, the Ford Focus RS brings all the safety features of your standard everyday Ford and mixes that with a blend of style, speed and sophistication. It’s probably the only car on the market that can carry a small family and boasts “drift mode”. With a range of customisable features, you can still have one of the swishes rides when you drop the kids off at school.

Honda Civic Type R

In need of a good amount of space? Then the massive boost and extremely roomy rear seats are what sets the Honda Civic Type R aside from the rest. With an ability to breathe with whatever road surface you drive it on while still holding a level of poise; give it a push and it will still drive extremely well in the standard drive mode.

Hyundai i30 N

A firm favourite among many, the Hyundai i30 N offers an entertaining driving experience for not much money at all; which is why its made our list. Boasting a spacious interior, big boot and low running costs, it is a great family car – but with a difference. Simply press a few buttons and the i30 turns into the ultimate hot hatch!

Jaguar XE SVR

Despite its race track appearance and performance, the Jaguar XE SVR is one of the most hardcore passenger cars on the market at the moment. Handling all kinds of road surfaces away from the flat track, this is a car worth trying out when you’re next in the market for a new family car that you actually want to get behind the wheel of!

No matter what fun family car you next choose, make sure you’re covered with the appropriate insurance and, consider taking out a manufacturers warranty policy if you’re buying second hand from the likes of ALA. These will keep you covered should anything happen!
