As we head out of the summer months and look towards the next season, you may be going through a period of reflection. Perhaps you are wondering what will come before Christmas and into the new year. If you’re thinking you should be injecting a bit more fun and a few more challenges into your life, then here are three ideas for new and exciting hobbies. Why not give one of them a try today?

Furniture restoration

Once mainly the activity of skilled craftsmen and women, and confined to businesses, furniture restoration is a hobby that’s really been taking off over recent years, with a vast variety of people turning their creative skills to it.

Not only can it be hugely satisfying and rewarding to turn an old piece of ‘junk’ furniture into something amazing, restoring it to its former glory, but it can also help save you some cash too.

Just imagine if these old items you were about to take to the rubbish dump or recycling area could be revived, instead of you heading to the furniture store to spend thousands of pounds on replacements.

Restoration is something that you can teach yourself, using inspiration from ‘how to’ blogs and tutorial videos. You could also look into local workshop listings to see if there’s a group you could join to hone your budding skills.

Learn a new language

Nothing can be more exciting than learning a new language. Not only does it get your brain flowing, but it can also open your eyes to new cultures and new ways of thinking. If you love travelling to particular countries, think about choosing a language that would be most useful on your trips, something that you would be able to use in real life to practice and refine. Maybe French would be a good option if you head across the English Channel frequently?

Learning a new language can also help you in your career. Going to a job interview with such a skill under your belt could prove to be a huge asset. If the company has a global outlook, it will be looking to have staff who have a broad base of language skills. For example, if you worked in the department overseeing the Asia-Pacific region, maybe learning Mandarin would be helpful? Search for Chinese School London, for instance, if you’re looking for an exceptional place to study.

Rock climbing

If you’re a lover of the outdoors, then why not set your sights on a new hobby that truly takes you to new heights? Learning to rock climb can be daunting but also extremely exciting. You should start out by taking lessons on an indoor climbing wall with expert training and supervision to build your skills. All being well, you can then look at joining a rock-climbing club to take your passion to the outdoors. It can be an extremely challenging activity, and you need to know your limits and take lots of safety precautions. When it’s done properly, however, you could get the new buzz you have been looking for!
