Learning Disability Week is a week of national campaigning and awareness raising run by Mencap. For this year’s Learning Disability Week, the charity is asking people to share stories of their superheroes.

As Mencap explains: “This year, we're celebrating the amazing, brave and selfless people in our lives.

“The world is full of bad attitudes, wrong stereotypes and difficult barriers. We want to turn that around and celebrate the everyday superheroes that make all the difference and, most importantly, make us smile.”

To tell Mencap about your superhero, you can:

Derriford Hospital have a Learning Disabilities team who have been addressing issues within its health care provision.

Kate Bamforth, Team Leader for Learning Disabilities and Vulnerable Adults at Derriford Hospital said: “The Learning Disability Team in Derriford would like to thank everyone who has helped them achieve their aim this last year – of endeavouring to ensure that people with a Learning Disability are enabled to have the same outcome of health care as anyone else.

“We have encountered positive, helpful and dynamic staff and we have been receiving feedback from our service users that many of them are less nervous about coming to the hospital, so well done and thank you to all those people.

“We hope that we can continue to build on this positive attitude and provide an inclusive service that makes adjustments for people’s individuality when they are unable to follow the set pathways.”
